Pretty Powerful Paw Paw

Paw paws are a great addition to your morning bowl of fruit, smoothie or fruit salad. Paw Paw is said to be good for;

  • Eye health: An antioxidant found in paw paw filters out harmful blue light rays, and it is thought to play a role in eye health and even said to ward off macular degeneration.
  • Asthma: A high amount of certain nutrients is said to lower the risk of asthma developing, and one of these nutrients is beta-carotene. And, you guessed it, beta-carotene is found in paw paws.
  • Strong bones: Low intakes of Vitamin K are associated with a higher risk of bone fracture. This vitamin improves calcium absorption and may reduce the excretion of calcium through urine. Paw paws are a good source of this vitamin.
  • Digestion: Paw paws contain an enzyme called papain that aids digestion – this is why paw paw is also a good meat tenderiser. With its high fibre and water content, it also helps to prevent constipation and digestive tract health.
  • Healing skin: When mashed and applied to wounds or burnt areas of the skin, paw paw appears to be beneficial in promoting healing and preventing infection. Researchers believe that the proteolytic enzymes chymopapain and papain in paw paw are responsible.

 TIP:  For a quick and tropical fruit salad, combine frozen papaya pieces, frozen mango pieces, frozen pineapple pieces, frozen banana slices, frozen kiwi pieces, frozen pomegranate kernels into a bowl and top it up with freshly squeezed orange juice.   They will defrost while you are having your meal and you’ll have a refreshing ice cold dessert.
